Senior High Notes 26th June

Senior High Notes 26th June

The Independent Schools of the Year awards were launched in 2018 to highlight the excellence of the student experience in independent schools. It is with great pleasure that I am able to tell you that Derby High School has been shortlisted for an award in the Student Careers Programme category this year, with the final results being announced in October. This award is for the school which best helps the students with on-going advice and support on choosing a career and assists them with finding suitable work experience, including internships, and in preparing for future employment.

This week I have been reading the reports for all students and writing my Headteacher’s comments. I am incredibly impressed and proud of how our senior students have managed during this most unusual summer term; their creativity, academic curiosity and enthusiasm has been remarkably impressive.

Best Wishes

Amanda Solloway MP Webinar

On Friday 10th July from 1pm to 2pm we are hosting a Q&A Webinar with Derby North MP Amanda Solloway.  Amanda regained the Derby North seat in the December General Election and is very keen to engage with local schools and young people.  We have a number of students from U4 and above already signed up, and many have already sent in some very mature and probing questions for Amanda to answer.  There is still time to sign up for this and submit questions.  If you’d like to take part please see Mr Lee’s email and reply to him directly.

Fancy chatting to Grandmaster Glitch or Bob the Builder??

Before the events of this year we had planned to have Marc Silk, voice actor, come into school during Activity Week to talk about his career as the voice behind characters on shows such as Go Jetters, Bob the Builder, Thunderbirds, as well as his role as Aks Moe in Star Wars episode 1. Sadly we had to postpone this, but he has agreed to do a virtual taster of the talk next week after all, and we’re very excited to offer this to all year groups from Upper 3 and up, next Thursday 2 July at 2pm.

This will take place on Teams and space may be limited so will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If you would like to attend, please follow this link to MS Forms before the end of school on Tuesday 30 June…

This talk is not just for those who are interested in those shows, or only for those interested in acting, and should be a fun ride through a showbiz world that has seen him work with all manner of famous names. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask him any questions you may have. We can’t wait! For more info on Marc and his work visit  http://www.marcsilk.com/

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Photographs of the KS3 drama production, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are now available to view on the school website. We are sorry for the delay publishing these photographs but delighted that you can now see them by clicking here.

UKMT Junior Maths Challenge 2020

It was a very different type of Junior Maths Challenge that took place yesterday. A self-selected group of Upper 3 and Lower 4 spent an hour taking part in a rescheduled online competition at home, which made quite a change from sitting in rows in the senior hall with a pencil and paper!

Well done to all those who took the time to do so on one of the hottest days of the year so far. We look forward to receiving the results.

How Are Your Sunflowers?

You may recall in March Mrs Chapman and Chaplain Jo sent you sunflower seeds? We’ve enjoyed receiving your photographs and watching them grow. It would be lovely to see how tall they are now. Please do keep sending in your photos to Mrs Cotton, rcotton@derbyhigh.derby.sch.uk.
