Senior High Notes 24th November 2021

Another busy week at Derby High has concluded with the much anticipated return of House Drama. Following a year’s break due to covid, it has been brilliant to be able to bring back this wonderful DHS tradition. House competitions, whether they be sport, debating, drama or music, always stir up great passion, camaraderie and excitement. In line with our covid safe measures, performances were live-streamed into form rooms this afternoon for all students to watch together - and I have been fortunate to be able to see it at home, whilst I am isolating with Covid. It has been a fabulous afternoon, with great performances and teamwork both on and off stage. My thanks go to Mrs Supran, Mrs Maddox, Mrs Bellman and the House Captains for their hard work throughout the auditions, rehearsals and performances.  Thank you also to Mrs Cotton and Mr Bentley for ensuring all the technical aspects of the live stream performances went smoothly this afternoon.

Talking of traditions, it is fantastic to see our outdoor Christmas tree return to the Head’s Lawn. Christmas preparations are in full swing with lots of rehearsals and recordings for our Senior Christmas Concert and Carol Service. We look forward to sharing these performances with you in the coming weeks.

I wish you a restful, extended weekend. The exeat gives everyone the opportunity to recharge batteries ready for the final weeks of the term.

Best wishes,

Spanish Royalty!

Megan, a Spanish student in L6, has sent a letter to the Spanish King and Queen, (El rey Felipe y la reina Doña Leticia) to tell them how much she loves learning about the Spanish language and culture and that she is looking forward to studying the Spanish monarchy in U6. Let's see if we get a reply. Buena suerte Megan!

Empowered Poetry Competition

Congratulations to Zainab in U4, whose poem, 'Remember Me?', has been chosen for an anthology which celebrates the writing of young people, inviting them to write on a topic which is dear to them.  Zainab's poem takes the form of a letter to her former self, encouraging her to be satisfied with her life.

Darcy and Pippa

Congratulations for a achieving a double clear in the British Showjumping 1M.05 & 1M.10 classes at the weekend. As the course was outside, they were both thankful for the dry weather!

Swimming Success

On Saturday, Jenny (U4) and her artistic swimming team won gold in the midlands regional championships!  A fantastic achievement!

U15 Netball

On Monday, the U15 netball teams travelled to Landau Forte to play in friendly games. Both teams worked well together, and produced some very pleasing performances. They kept disciplined on the court, and it was great to see them communicating with each other and putting the skills that they have honed in training into practice.

The A team won their game with a strong score of 30-0, and the B team won their game 11-6. Well done to all who took part - a fantastic demonstration of fair play and competitiveness by all involved.

Online Safety

U5 / Y11 have been learning about how to recognise online fraud and scams in their ICT lessons this week as part of this Half Term’s Online Safety module.  Ahead of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas shopping online, here are links to some excellent sources of information and practical advice Y11 have been using on how to avoid falling for online scams and fraud, and what to do if the worst does happen.

U5 French

This morning we video-called a French student (Mr Quichaud’s niece) to ask her about the French school system. We were able to compare how subjects are taught and school life (uniform, etc). Students were speaking in target language during the whole call.  Well done!
