Senior High Notes 25th March 2022

This week, I have been doing one of my favourite tasks of the year - interviewing each of our L6 students to award prefect roles for the next 12 months. Accompanying me in this have been Mr Gallagher and our Sixth Form tutors, who know these students particularly well. We have all been so impressed by the confidence, enthusiasm and breadth of talent these students exhibited during their interviews.

Here at Derby High it is so true every Friday that we have had a very busy week. Our pupils astound me with all that they do alongside their studies. On Wednesday and Thursday this week, our Year 5 performed Hoodwinked - a fabulous show with great acting and singing and so many very funny moments. I was blown away by the incredible confidence these pupils showed on stage. Congratulations to all involved.

I feel as if every week I start my High Notes with ‘Another busy week’! But here at Derby High it is so true every week. Our students astound me with all that they do alongside their studies. Yesterday afternoon I was able to watch our Under 15 netball team play in the County final. Having won the City tournament earlier this term, they went into this tournament unbeaten and with high hopes. Some fabulous netball was played, with great defensive strength and impressive shooting leading the team to make it to the final, winning every match along the way. In the final they played Trent College, winning 13-3 and becoming County Champions. What was most impressive with this team was the excellent teamwork and commitment they showed. Well done!!

How often do we find ourselves saying ‘that’s impossible’ when trying to solve a puzzle or try something new. I have certainly been heard to say ‘that can’t be done’ when doing the latest wordle and nerdle! In my assembly on Wednesday morning, I set a challenge for four Year 6 volunteers. I gave them each an A3 piece of paper and asked them to cut their piece of paper so they can climb through it without tearing the paper. The hall fell silent as everyone watched to see if these four pupils could complete this task. Once their minute was up each of these volunteers came to the front to see if they were successful – 2 were and 2 weren’t.

It's been another incredibly busy week, with netball matches and tournaments, students attending the Celebration of Dance, rehearsals for the production and so many interesting activities. I had the pleasure of welcoming Mr Clive Rickart, CEO of the Society of Heads to the school on Wednesday. Mr Rickart was hugely impressed with all that he saw, from our pre-school children learning the sound e in phonics and Year 5 rehearsing their songs for their musical, to Sixth Form students working in the DT area and Year 7 engaged and focused in an interesting geography lesson about economic activity in England.

The Senior Hall was buzzing last night for our GCSE Options Evening. It was wonderful to welcome our Year 9 parents and students into school for such an important event. Our GCSE Options booklet is available here. It’s wonderful to be able to hold in person events again and have the opportunities to talk to students and parents about our broad and balanced curriculum. After a brief presentation, our guests had the opportunity to meet subject teachers and discuss their subject choices.

It has been truly special to be able to come back together as a whole Primary School for assemblies in person, the first time in two years. For many of our pupils they had not yet experienced this wonderful part of Derby High life. We were all blown away by the fabulous singing which really does add to our sense of community.
