Senior High Notes 26th February 2021

Spring is starting to pop up everywhere - crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths - and with so much hope ahead with the easing of lockdown restrictions, we are really looking forward to welcoming all students back to school on the 8th March. Preparations are well underway to safely bring the whole community back together. I will be writing to all parents early next week with the full details. Enjoy the sunshine this weekend!

Primary High Notes 26th February 2021

In my Primary assembly yesterday I made a bit of a mess with a tube of toothpaste! I used the tube of toothpaste to illustrate how difficult it is to take something back after it has been said or done. Just like our words or actions, once you squirt toothpaste out of the tube, it is impossible to get it all back in. It is very easy to say or do something unkind, untruthful or untrue but it is very difficult to take it back - once it has been said or done all you can do is apologise but the damage has been done. This is also very true in the world of social media, once a message or post is out there, it is part of your digital footprint and could come back to haunt you later on.

Primary High Notes 12th February 2021

In my live Infant assembly yesterday I linked Tom Brady, Frank Rothwell and Gerald the Giraffe. Frank Rothwell and Tom Brady made the news over the weekend. Tom Brady because at the age 43 years and 188 days, he became the oldest player to play in the biggest game in US sport, extending his record for Super Bowl appearances to 10. Many people in the media and sporting world were doubting him, could he do it again, especially at his age. Brady’s coach says his success comes down to three distinct advantages: his work ethic, his ability to think strategically, and his ability to narrow his focus on the moment at hand.

Derby High Primary Percussion Challenge

Today in Mr Harper’s Celebration Assembly, all of Primary were treated to the live premier of the Primary Percussion Challenge video. As a continuation of the pupils' live music lessons this term, Mrs Cooke, Head of Primary Music, challenged all of Primary to create their very own percussion kit and play along with a chosen track. The children were inspired by Nandi Bushell, a 10-year-old drummer who has featured in a TV advert. After watching Nandi in a video on how to create a percussion kit from everyday household items, the children were set the task.

Senior High Notes 5th February 2021

We can all think of at least one song that, when we hear it, triggers an emotional response. It might be a song that accompanied the first dance at your wedding, or a song that reminds you of something that has happened. That one song that is your go-to tune, it might bring back special memories or simply gets you up dancing when you really need it. For me, it is Wake Me Up by Avicii. It reminds me of the 4 years I spent living and working in the North of Scotland, it’s a song that really gets me going when I might not feel like it. I played this tune at the beginning of my assembly today, and it was lovely to see students and teachers alike bopping along to it.
