Senior High Notes 2nd July 2021

What a year! We have worked our way through it and we have all learned a lot. As the academic year draws to a close, I would like to thank everyone in the Derby High community. Despite the challenges, so much has been achieved. I have been overwhelmed by the strength of our school community and its resilience in response to the pandemic. The willingness of our staff and students to adapt, sometimes at short notice, has also been truly inspirational. I am extremely grateful to all our staff for everything they have done to ensure the smooth running of the school and support the education of our students. Our students have taken everything in their stride this year, they have stayed positive, inquisitive and engaged, even when learning went online. Thank you also to you, the parents, for supporting your children and our staff as we navigated through the year, keeping everyone safe.

Today we held our much anticipated Senior School Sports Day. Thank you to Miss Stirland, the PE department and all staff for their hard work ensuring that the day was so successful. I am sure that the cheering and shouting from our students and staff could be heard far and wide. It has been just wonderful to see everyone enjoying being back together, celebrating and supporting each other’s achievements. It is only ever possible to provide a flavour and a snapshot of all that is going on at Derby High through my weekly High Notes, but whatever your sons and daughters have been involved in, at whatever level, I congratulate them for their commitment, achievement and good cheer.

In my assembly yesterday we listened to the song 'Proud' by Heather Small. I asked pupils and staff to reflect on this last year and think about all that they have achieved and as the song goes “what have you done today to make you feel proud?” An enormous amount has been accomplished this year by our pupils and staff. It is only ever possible to provide a flavour and a snapshot of all that is going on at Derby High through my weekly High Notes, but whatever your sons and daughters have been involved in, at whatever level, I congratulate them for their commitment, achievement and good cheer. We will be celebrating all that we are proud of from this academic year next week in our Festival of Learning.

The Summer Term is always a wonderful time of celebrations, events and opportunities to look ahead. Despite the current situation and restrictions, our Primary team are ensuring that this year’s Summer Term offers these opportunities, albeit in different ways. On Wednesday, our Year 6 classes visited Hollowford, Peak District Outdoor Activity Centre for an exciting day of challenge, team building and fun. Mr Horne and Mrs Swainston were hugely proud of their pupils, reporting that they were wonderful company, working brilliantly together and trying new activities.

On Wednesday this week we celebrated with our U6, the end of their time at Derby High. This group of young people have shown great resilience, strength of character, care and kindness. We are hugely proud of all that they have achieved during their time at school. The Leavers’ Service is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the achievements and events throughout their time at school. These students have represented the school in many a sporting competition, performed in concerts and productions, showcased their talents in art, visited far flung destinations to further their studies and so much more. Thank you to the U6 and Chaplain Jo for delivering a wonderful service.

In my assembly this morning I talked about daisies. On my walks to work I see a lot of them, especially in the grass on the pavements along Chain Lane. Unlike many other flowers, daisies are seen as weeds, so we don’t worry if we mow them or trample on them. Daisies are found in many places, including in grass, in cracks in the ground and on waste sites. They are good at conquering new habitats. In fact, daisies can be found everywhere on earth except Antarctica. I think there are two important lessons we can learn from daisies.
