The U12 Rounders team travelled to Chellaston to play in the City Rounders Tournament. Their tournament was organised slightly differently to other year groups’ tournaments this year, in that they played a round robin format, playing a total of 6 games over the afternoon.
Our first game against Littleover was very positive and we secured our first win with a score of 3 – 0.5. The girls had plenty of time to warm up ahead of this game and generally did well, with a number of players knocking up half rounders. When we fielded the team were on fire with our catches, and on their posts – stumping at least 5 players out!
The next game was against Derby Moor and, again, the girls performed very well. With lots of girls scoring full rounders, as well as half rounders, the score line was a healthy 5 rounders at the change-over. Again, some very effective fielding enabled the team to stump players out, and Priya also caught out an amazing high and deep hit mid-way through the innings. The final score was 5 – 1.5 to Derby High.
We had one game before we had a break and this was against Chellaston, the hosts. We batted first and sadly had a couple of girls stumped out in the first few balls. Nevertheless, the girls remained focused and confident and were able to score a total of 5 rounders, with the help of Maddie and Izzy scoring some very strong rounders in the final minutes. This fielding innings was potentially one of the best of the evening, with the team catching out a number of strong hits and very closely stumping a number of players out – we got the entire team out before the time was up. Derby High secured another win, 5 – 1.
We then met West Park in our penultimate game and we knew it would be a tight game following a friendly fixture earlier in the team. The girls started well, but the fielding was strong and prevented us from sneaking to second post to score on a number of occasions. Coupled with some players being caught out, the girls knew they had to dig deep. Some half rounders were scored and a rounder with the final ball from Lia secured us with a total of 3.5 rounders. The team fielded strongly against West Park, but they had a couple of very strong hitters who were able to score with ease. A shout out to Amelie for a fantastic one handed catch which did add to the four players we managed to get out, but sadly they were able to score a total of 5 rounders in total, with the last 1.5 rounders coming from the final few balls.
Our final match was against Woodlands, which was a great game to watch, with plenty of big hits and strong fielding from both teams. We scored a total of 4 rounders and it was then over to Woodlands to bat. They slowly added to their score as the time went on, with some big hits and effective running. Special mention must go to Daisy for a phenomenal catch in the deep, which certainly surprised us all! However, Woodlands were able to draw with 4 rounders – again, from the final ball.
The girls represented the school fantastically during the tournament and should be proud of their achievements, as they played some amazing rounders. They also were a very supportive team, as we had three reserves for each game, and the girls rotated around the positions if and when was necessary. The girls finished with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss meaning that overall, they finished in 2nd place. A positive future ahead for this team! Well done to all.BACK
