Author Gives Top Writing Tips

Author Gives Top Writing Tips

Author Katherine Webber gave our Year 9 students some top writing tips as part of a talk to promote her second novel.

This was Katherine’s second visit to Derby High and this time she came in to talk about her latest book ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’.

She said: “In this book the central character is beautiful, privileged and popular and I always say to people to give her until the end of the book. She seems like she’s got everything together but five years ago something really tragic happened in her life and she’s very secretive about it, she doesn’t get over this thing that happened.”

Katherine’s first book, Wing Jones, centres on a character called Wing, who is a 15-year-old girl with a grandmother from China and another from Ghana and she feels caught between worlds when tragedy strikes. That’s when she discovers she has a talent for running that she never knew she had.

After talking about her journey to becoming a writer, Katherine gave students advice about writing before signing books for them.

She said: “For my new book I was inspired by my first full on heartbreak, I was able to remember what those feelings felt like. Things that can be hard can be excellent for writing.

“The book is set in Palm Springs where I spent a lot of my childhood. When you are thinking about how to make a character feel real you can use the things in your life, there are so many things that are unique to you. You could set your book in a real place that you know. Use all of the details to make the reader feel like they are there and bring the place to life.”

Sue Bussey, library resources manager, said: “Katherine gave some sound advice about the struggle to achieve what you really want in life and how difficult it can be, plus, how to rise above perceived failure and rejection.  Her new book deals with some very difficult concepts about how we see ourselves and how we deal with grief and relationships.

“We also had the added bonus of Katherine being accompanied by Rosi Crawley, an award winning and senior publicity manager for Walker Books.  While Katherine talked to students as she signed their books Rosi gave an impromptu careers talk around publishing and answered some excellent questions from the students.”
